Kobo Abe (1924–1993) was a Japanese playwright, novelist, and director, known for his surrealistic and existentialist works. He is best known for his novel The Woman in the Dunes, which was adapted into an award-winning film in 1964. His other works include The Face of Another, The Box Man, and The Ark Sakura.
