M. C. Escher

Maurits Cornelis (M.C.) Escher was a Dutch graphic artist born on June 17, 1898, in Leeuwarden, Netherlands, and died on March 27, 1972. He is best known for his mathematically inspired woodcuts, lithographs, and mezzotints that feature complex geometric patterns, architectural illusions, and interlocking figures, combining art with elements of science and mathematics in a unique way. Escher's work explores concepts of infinity, symmetry, perspective, and tessellation, often using impossible constructions and "the regular division of the plane," with motifs that morph into different shapes in a seamless manner. His artistic expressions have captivated a wide audience, stretching beyond the traditional art world to influence pop culture and the scientific community. Despite never receiving formal mathematical training, Escher's mastery of geometric principles and visual paradoxes has made him a favorite among mathematicians and scientists, as well as those interested in the psychological and philosophical implications of visually impossible worlds.
