Michael Dorris (1945–1997) was a prominent American author of novels, essays, and children's books. He was also a scholar of Native American studies. Dorris was of Modoc, Irish, and French descent and was best known for his works that dealt with Native American culture and heritage. His notable works include the novel "A Yellow Raft in Blue Water" (1987) and the non-fiction book "The Broken Cord" (1989), which raised awareness about fetal alcohol syndrome and received the National Book Critics Circle Award. Dorris was married to author Louise Erdrich, with whom he collaborated on some projects. Tragically, his career ended in controversy and personal turmoil, and he died by suicide in 1997. His literary contributions, particularly his focus on Native American themes, continue to be recognized and studied.
