Thomas King

Thomas King is a celebrated writer, broadcaster, and academic of Cherokee and Greek descent. Born in the United States on April 24, 1943, he later moved to Canada, which has been a significant influence on his work and perspective. King is best known for his contributions to literature, particularly in the realm of contemporary Indigenous experiences in North America. Notable for his engaging storytelling and wry sense of humor, King has produced a range of works, including novels, short stories, and nonfiction. Some of his most acclaimed books include "Green Grass, Running Water"—a novel that playfully subverts Native American stereotypes and traditional Western narratives—and "The Inconvenient Indian: A Curious Account of Native People in North America," which offers a critical and personal reflection on the history and current state of Indigenous peoples' affairs. King's writing frequently addresses themes of identity, culture, and the intersection of Indigenous and Western societies, often with a sharp satirical twist. In addition to his literary work, King has taught at several universities and was the first Indigenous person to deliver the prestigious Massey Lectures, which he turned into the book "The Truth About Stories: A Native Narrative," further solidifying his status as an important voice in Indigenous and Canadian literature.
